Free guided kayak programs and more to be offered at Elk State Park in June

The Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex will once again offer a series of free kayak programs from the Instanter Boat Launch at Elk State Park. Back by popular demand these programs will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday June 5th and Sunday June 19th. Kayaks and other paddle craft are a great way to experience nature and get in some healthy outdoor recreation. Join a park educator for a guided paddle trip around the Seven Mile Bay area of East Branch.

No Boat? No Problem! The Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex has a fleet of Kayaks as well as, PFD’s and paddles available to be loaned out for these programs. Of course you can use your own boat, and gear as well if they are available to you. Any personal kayaks must have a current DCNR Launch Permit to be able to participate and all participants must wear a PFD while kayaking on the lake.

Registration is required as the park has a limited number of kayaks for participants to use on a first come, first served basis. Participants must be 18 years or older to attend and can register by calling Kinzua Bridge State Park at (814) 778-5467.

Additional programs offered in June include the following:

• History of Instanter– Sunday, June 12th at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Underneath East Branch Lake lies the remains of the old town of Instanter. Learn how natural resources and the railroad led to the settlement of the town at the junction of Seven Mile Run & Instanter Creek back in the 19th century. A park educator will be on hand with historical photos of the old town’s landmarks. Meets at Instanter Boat Launch.

• Mighty Mustelids– Sunday, June 26th at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Mustelidea or weasel family are highly adapted predators.
