St. Marys Area track and field announced on Monday that a total of six records were broken during the Elk County Varsity Track and Field Meet and Elk County Junior High Track and Field Meet, which were both held at St. Marys Area High School last week. Three records fell during the varsity meet, and the other three fell during the junior high meet. Johnsonburg senior Enoch Aboussou set two of the new varsity records as he won both boys’ long jump and triple jump. In boys’ long jump, the previous record of 21’ had been set by Steve Allen of Ridgway in 1982. Aboussou broke that record last week with a jump of 21’5”. He was the lone participant in this year’s event to exceed the 20’ mark. Aboussou’s sophomore teammate Eli Perez was second in the event with a jump of 18’8.75”, and ECC’s Timmy Brannock was third with a jump of 18’1.5”. In boys’ triple jump, the previous record of 43’4.5” had been set by Elk County Catholic’s Adam Simbeck in 2012. Aboussou set a new mark of 45’6” in this year’s event. He was the lone competitor to exceed the 40’ mark. Runner-up Luke Jansen of ECC had a jump of 38’1.5”. The Lady Dutch 4x800 meter relay team also broke a record that had stood for the past decade. In 2012, the team of M. Barber, S. Foster, A. Gennocro, and S. Bridges set the previous record time of 9.57.33 in the event. This year, the team of Lucia Hayes, Madison Blythe, Mary Defilippi, and Gabby Pistner bested that mark, winning the event in a time of 9:52.89 over a team from ECC, who finished second in 10:06.08. In the boys’ junior high meet, ECC’s Frankie Smith set new records in both the 100 meter dash and 400 meter dash. In the boys’ 100 meter dash, the previous record of 11.9 seconds had been set by ECC’s Jacob Koss in 2014. Smith, who is in eighth grade, won this year’s event in 11.78 seconds. Johnsonburg’ Kaiden Garris was the runner-up in a time of 12.44 seconds. In the boys’ 400 meter dash, the previous record of 56.2 seconds had been set by Andrew Wolf of ECC in 2007. Smith won this year’s event in a time of 54.64 seconds. The runner-up was St. Marys Area’s Lukasz Curtis in a time of 58.03 seconds. The final record to fall in the junior high meet was in the girls’ 100 meter hurdles. The previous record in the event was 17.8 seconds, set by Johnsonburg’s Lindsey Steis in 2016. In this year’s event, Johnsonburg eighth grader Maddy MacAfee bested that time, winning the event in 16.97 seconds. ECC’s Peyton Newton was a full two seconds back, finishing in 18.97 seconds.
