High-power shooters take the stage at RRC

RIDGWAY - The three-day NRA Highpower Hunter and Standard Rifle National Championships get underway today at the Ridgway Rifle Club (RRC) on Grant Road.

Wednesday was tune-up day for the shooters from across the country, Canada, and Mexico. The NRA Smallbore Championships started on Sunday and finished on Tuesday. The match was also the first of the two leg Lapua Monarch Cup competition which finishes at Club De Tiro Saltillo Safari in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, on Sept. 17-18.

Like the smallbore matches, there are five High-power classifications - Master, AAA, AA, A and B. Individual match and the overall championships are issued for Women, Junior, Intermediate, Sub-Junior and Senior divisions.

Today’s shooting at the RRC high-power range starts following the opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. If you plan on attending over the next three days, you’ll want to have ear protection.

(AP) - Michigan State has signed coach Tom Izzo to a new deal valued at $6.2 million per season, giving him about $2 million more each year.

The school announced the deal Thursday, saying that the five-year rollover contract will need to be approved by its board next month.
