walks up to it but that does happen, too.

I am not disappointed. I am still very grateful that I got the buck and solved the mystery. Really, sometimes wondering why bothering to hold off for bigger bucks crosses my mind from time to time. Especially, it comes to mind while gnawing on a roast from him that was tasty but tough as an old buck can get. Fixing the accuracy of buck size on the hoof has proven elusive. We’ve all been trying year after year and while some bucks are better than others, only drastic differences are surely noticeable. We know a huge buck when we see it and we know a small buck when we see it but there is a range where a buck’s score can swing thirty pope and young points or so from hoof to ground; score points that seem to escape the buck when he hits the ground.

What can we glean from all this information? I have taken to heart that while it seems that most every buck that has escaped my gun or bow all hang in my memories as the biggest bucks I’ve ever seen if I have seen 20 huge bucks, the top ten are still running around in the woods or have met an unknown fate. Of course, when you calculate ground shrinkage, it can be assumed that perhaps those elusive deer were perhaps truly the biggest bucks we have ever seen running but they would not have been if we had the opportunity, fortune, or luck to walk up on them. Perhaps some of the bucks that you do have on the wall are just a little bit bigger.

See you along the stream.
