The St. Marys Area junior varsity Dutch baseball team opened their season against Punxsutawney last week, with the Chucks winning by a score of 8-3.

Both teams got on the board in the opening inning of the contest, which was played in Punxsutawney, with the Chucks pulling away in the middle innings before St. Marys got a pair of runs back in the top of the final inning.

Mason Nicklas, Aiden Beimel and Jackson Vollmer all spent time on the mound for St. Marys. Nicklas started the game and worked the first four innings, giving up four hits, walking three, and striking out three. Beimel took over for one inning, giving up one hit and walking three. Vollmer worked the final inning, walking one and striking out one.

St. Marys had five hits in the game, led by a double by Cayden Vogt.

AJ Himes went twofor-two for the Dutchmen with a pair of singles and one run scored. Beimel was two-for-four with one run scored, and Nicklas also scored a run.

Ty Limrick and L Neal pitched for Punxsy. Limrick worked the first five innings, giving up three hits, walking one, and striking out four. Landon Neal took over for the final two innings, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out one.

The Chucks also had five hits in the game, led by Parker Stahlman and Alex Shoemaker with home runs and Nick Motter with a double.

Beimel led off the top of the opening inning with a single for the Dutchmen. With Jayce Walter at bat, Beimel stole second. Beimel then scored as Walter grounded out to the first baseman, putting St. Marys on the board leading 1-0.

A groundout and a strikeout brought the Chucks up to bat for the first time, and they wasted little time putting three runs of their own on the scoreboard.

With one out, Maddox Hetrick drew a walk and then scored on a home run by Stahlman that put Punxsy up 2-1. Limrick followed that up with a single, and Lucas Menetti reached base on an error. With Neal at bat, both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and then Limrick scored as Neal grounded out to the third baseman, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Chucks.

Landon Temchula drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Himes drew a twoout walk for the Dutchmen in the top of the second but got left stranded.

Punxsutawney also stranded a pair of runners in the home half of the inning. Motter led off with a double and then Hetrick joined him on base after being hit by a pitch with one out. A lineout and a strikeout ended the frame.

Batters for both teams went down in order in the third. Vogt led off the top of the fourth with a double for the Dutchmen, but the next three batters went down in order.

Shoemaker led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to increase Punxsutawney’s lead to 4-1.

Brody Stouffer followed that up with a one-out walk, but a pair of groundouts left him stranded.

Himes singled to lead off the fifth inning for St. Marys, but once again the team could not get anything going after that as a flyout and a pair of strikeouts sent the next three batters down in order.

Limrick drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the inning but was then erased as Menetti grounded into a double play. However, three straight errors and a walk put another run on the board for the Chucks, and then three more runs scored on a single by Stouffer and an ensuing error, making the score 8-1. Following another walk, a fielder’s choice finally got St. Marys out of the inning.

St. Marys could not get anything going in the top of the sixth, and Punxsy stranded a runner after Neal drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the inning.

Jack Neil led off the top of the seventh with a walk for the Dutchmen but then was erased at second as Nicklas grounded into a fielder’s choice. A single by Himes moved Nicklas to third, and then both Nicklas and Himes scored as Joey Lease reached on an error. Following a strikeout, Beimel singled to put runners on the corners for the Dutchmen, but a flyout ended the game with Punxsy winning 8-3.
